BA (Hons) Textiles – AUB

I chose this course because it was a
lot broader than the other universities. A lot of them are textiles and fashion, or textiles on business. I just wanted
to do lots of things really, before I decided what exactly it was that I wanted to do. This course let me do that. It’s a very creative approach to
textiles and textile design. We work across a variety of processes, very hands-on, very vocational. We work with and prints, dye, stitch, manipulation, construct, drawing and design development. It’s for fashion
fabrics, it’s for interior fabrics, it’s for
artefact soft and hard within an interior and for the body,
as well as design craft ideas within textiles. It’s a
very broad course. I know that people that wanted to do fashion have come over here, just because fashion can be quite commercial I
think. Here you can do whatever you want and get away with it and it’s just fun. I mean if I wasn’t at uni, I’d be doing
this in my spare time anyway. We’re looking for creativity, looking for
somebody that has a passion to go forward in the area of textiles, so even if you’ve not got a great understanding of textiles
processes but you’re drawing is exciting, you might use collage, you might use colour, you might draw with scissors, cutting, painting. There’s all different types way to approach the
subject. You might not have the skills, but don’t be put off, because that’s what
we teach you. There’s always someone there to give
advice, ask advice from. We have, I think,
quite a few tutorials, more than other courses. It’s
really really handy. The staff are all professionals and
have worked in industry. From staff that have worked in New York
studios, in print digital, to staff that work on their own projects. Textiles for interiors, textiles for fashion. Also we have staff
that work with the drawing processes within textiles. It’s very important that our
staff still practicing. We do a lot with Photography, for our portfolios, and there has been something with Fashion as well, and Interior Architecture. There’s quite a lot. It’s more like if you want to then you can do it ourselves, not like a set project. It’s a good way to network as well, early on. Those contacts we make now will be there in the future as well.
