Department of Nursing – White Coat Ceremony and OCI

[MUSIC PLAYING] The White Coat Ceremony is
a very important milestone. The significance
of it is that it is a rite of passage
for our students who have been checked
off, basically, on being able to do a
complete head to toe history and physical exam. It really represents a
developmental milestone in their academic careers,
[? whether ?] they transfer to a more advanced [? student ?]
and one who’s ready to go and actually put into practice
what they’ve been learning. The impact that
we’re making now is we’re educating nurses,
really in a manner that’s never been done before. And so we’re taking
online learning and we’re really bringing
it to the next level. And so we’re able to introduce
experiences and skills that really we haven’t been
able to duplicate in just solely asynchronous online programs. The greatest thing
about OCI was seeing the instructors
and how passionate they are about nursing,
and how passionate they are about teaching us. They had medical
actors come in and so we were able to work with them. So when we’re doing the exams,
we’re working with real people, and they’re trained to be able
to tell us and give us feedback as to whether or not we’re
doing the correct thing. And whether or not
we’re doing it right. I found that to be really
helpful because those are things that we’re going
to be doing as primary care providers. The quality of the student
that we’re drawing from is exceptional, but,
that aside, their hearts are truly exceptional. They want to make a difference. They want to go to a program
that makes a difference. I’m looking forward to
the rest of my training. I’m looking forward to becoming
more confident as a nurse practitioner. Looking forward to the
bonds that I’m forging with all of these people. And looking forward to
getting out in the community and helping people
that need to be helped.
