Designing a Fashion Collection : Fabric Stories for Fashion Collections

Alright now that you have, recap your inspiration
images which are called your mood board. That’s where you’re going to draw details from and
design elements when you create your collection, and you have then matched now to color A color
chips and you have no more than five or six selected for the first one. You can’t move
mountains at first. Now it’s time to figure out what fabrics you’re going to use. The
fabric selection, you generally are going to be geared towards, or you’re going to want
to pick fabrics out based on the colors, but think about also what season you’re designing
for. You don’t want any wool in the summer even though that gray wool matches that rock
really well. It’s not about matching. It’s about what kind of mood you’re going to convey
with the clothing that you’re designing. Do you want it to be light and airy? Well then
no wool. So think about that. You’re not going to have your final, your final fabric story
done until pretty much the very end of it. You’re going to change it a zillion times.
You’re going to start drawing and you’re going to change it again, but do pick from your
color, your color chart. Pick fabrics that are representational of that and that can
hearken back to this and draw details out of this. So far you just want an all over
color mood right now even with the fabrics, and you can change these at a later date.
You’ll figure out what textures work and what don’t. Right now it’s just about getting the
colors down, and so pick some fabrics based on your colors and inspiration and we’ll go
from there.
