‘Empowering women’: Fort Mill parents, girls fight dress code

I was dress coded three times
in the first week of school. And I want to speak out about this,
because the dress code is outdated and needs to be changed to fit modern
times and modern clothing.>>I’m just bringing together some
comments that we have gained from a public survey we put out there
to all the students. We had over 170 responses and
100 people comment with personal stories. So my goal tonight is just to share some
of those personal stories about how this dress code is affecting mainly girls. And how it’s affecting their
body image for years and years. We had kids from 2000, who graduated
in 2001, respond to our survey about how it has continued to impact
them throughout their lifetime. And so we really want to bring
that to the forefront and make sure we understand that it’s not just
one quick slap on the hand, put a coat on. But it’s really affecting
these girls long-term. Boys make fun of you. Felt very badly. Body shaming, fearful of retaliation. I stand here asking you today, is this how we want our students
feeling on a daily basis?>>It’s about empowering women to
speak out against the dress code and the policies that are created.>>My daughter just started
middle school this year and she is definitely stressed about it. Every morning she worries about if her
clothes will be okay to wear or not. She is very into school and learning and
very worried about her grades. And the last thing she wants is to
miss school, she hates missing school.>>Don’t tell me that I am a distraction. I am a human girl who tries her best in
school and wants to be successful in life. I come to school every day to get smarter,
not to fill my head with thoughts that I could get dress coded for wearing
shorts, leggings, or even being me. I hope we can come together as students,
parents, and faculty to work out a new dress code
to allow students to focus on what we are learning and
not stressing about our outfits.>>[APPLAUSE] [BLANK_AUDIO]
