Explore 204: Coat Drive

[ANNIE] It started out as this tiny nugget of an idea
and it has grown from there. It was started by a pervious District employee,
he approached the IPPC Board and said “Why don’t we try this coat drive to help meet
the needs of our families in our District.” We call it a coat drive because that is what
it started as but we also take snow boots and snow pants, hats, gloves, mittens and scarves. Anything that you would wrap yourself or kid
in to go out we have a need for it in the District and we would happily take your donation. [LISA] I think Naperville has this reputation of
being well off but there are always families in need. We know that not that long ago the bottom
fell out for a lot of people. And for whatever reason we have families that
have these needs and being able to support them is amazing. [ANNIE] Community service is very close to my heart. I was raised with a single parent and I remember
her struggling trying to get everything she needed and sometimes we need a little extra help. As I am an adult and a mom now I want to give
back as much as I can. The community response has been overwhelming
and it gets more and more every year. We have collected over 700 new and gently
used coats, they are all in great condition. [LISA] We want our kids to feel good in what we give
to them. We go through extra care to make sure their
coat matches their pants, matches their boots and gloves and hat just so that when they
put it on they’re feeling good about what they have. Every child deserves to have their basic needs
met so they can come to school and have the best education we can give them. The coat drive helps meet those basic needs. I’m so incredibly happy we’re able to do it.
