Hello, everyone today; We are going to learn about fabric stiffness test. So let us start with the introduction. Fabrics intended for clothing have less emphasis placed on their technical specification and more on their appearance and handling characteristics, such as lustre, smoothness or roughness stiffness, or limpness and draping qualities. Handle, the term given to properties assessed by touch or feel, depends upon subjective assessment of the Fabric by a person. Because of the subjective nature of these properties attempts have been made over the years to device objective tests to measure the factors that go to make up the handle. Fabric stiffness and drape were some of the earliest properties to be measured objectively. Before learning about Before learning about stiffness test. Now we will learn about some basic terminologies related to fabric stiffness. flexibility Flexibility is nothing, but the ease with which a specimen may be bent The next one is rigidity The Rigidity is the measure of resistance offered by a specimen bending. Drape, Drape is the ability of fabric to assume a graceful fold or appearance in use A form of the cantilever stiffness test is often used as a measure of a fabric’s stiffness. In the test a horizontal strip of fabric is clamped at one end and the rest of the strip allowed to hang under its own weight. In this context there are two measures of fabric stiffness, first is overhanging length and second one is bending angle. Here L is overhanging length and θ is the bending angle. Higher the Overhanging Length Stiffer will be the fabric. Also Bending angle is inversely proportional to fabric stiffness. based on this principle Shirley Stiffness Tester is designed. Measurement of fabric stiffness using Shirley Stiffness Tester This test measures the bending stiffness of a fabric by allowing a narrow strip of the fabric to bend to a fixed angle under its own weight. The length of fabric required to bend to specific angle is measured and is known as the bending length. Here p is the platform for which we’d need to place the fabrics tape and L1 and L2 are the Index lines? Which are inclined at inclined at 41.5 degrees To test the fabric stiffness fabric is placed over the platform such that its front end is matching with the bottom line. Then the measuring scale is placed over the fabric which measures the bending length. After placing the measuring scale, the scale along with fabric is pushed forward till the edge of the fabric is matching with index line. At this time scale movement is stopped and bending length is recorded. Four readings are taken for each specimen one face up and one face down on the first in and then the same for the second end. The mean bending length for warp and weft is calculated. The higher the bending length, the stiffer is the fabric. Thanks for watching this video.   2. at one point you said bending length is inversely proportional to fabric stiffness and at the end you said higher the bending length stiffer will be the fabric.
    pl. clarify.

  3. And also can you explain the importance of flexural rigidity and bending modulus, in terms of proportionality with stiffness., or in other terms.
