Fashion and Textiles – Rachel Purcell

I loved cutting up clothes and dressing up
when I was a kid, and I did want my own wedding dress shop when I was younger. Since I was
studying at college I’ve developed more interest in the business side of fashion.
I decided that that was the career I wanted to go into. So I went to lots of open days and at Huddersfield
I just felt like the campus was really nice, it wasn’t too big and spread out. I wasn’t
going to have to be travelling from campus to campus and the staff were really, really friendly
as well, and they just made you feel really comfortable which I think is really important
when you’re moving away from home. Some projects are very designing a range,
and things, whereas others are much heavily more focused on business and reports. So I
think you get a really broad spectrum of what we study. In my third year I did a placement
at Hunter Boots in London. I was a product merchandising intern. I learnt so much when
I was there so it was a really, really good experience and I would recommend for anybody
on the course to do a placement year, because you gain so much more experience and applying
what you’re learning on the course, in real life. In the start of second year, we went to the
Burberry Spring/Summer ’14 fashion show at London Fashion Week. There was so many
celebrities and fashion industry people there, as a student, it’s just not somewhere you’d
expect to be able to go to and so to have the opportunity to go was just incredible. When I finish university I’d really like
to become a brand buyer in the premium and luxury side of fashion for a big department
store.
