A SOUTH OMAHA HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE RECEIVES THE O-K TO WEAR AN EAGLE FEATHER IN HER GRADUATION CAP. SHE WAS REJECTED AT FIRST — BUT AS JOHN CHAPMAN EXPLAINS — THAT CHANGED AFTER MEMBERS OF THE NATIVE AMERICAN COMMUNITY TOLD THE SCHOOL BOARD OF THE FEATHER’S SIGNIFICANCE. JOHN CHAPMAN, REPORTING: “NOW ALL OF THE SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES WILL BE ABLE TO HOLD THEIR HEADS HIGH WHEY THEY GRADUATE TONIGHT.” LILIANA TAMAYO WANTED TO HONOR HER NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE BY WEARING A FEATHER IN HER GRADUATION CAP, BUT SOUTH HIGH SAID NO AND FOR A WHILE SHE THOUGHT SHE MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO CARRY ON A TRADITION. LILIANA TAMAYO, SOUTH HIGH GRADUATE: “IT’S VERY IMPORTANT COMING FROM LIVING ON A RESERVATION AND MOVING HERE AND NOT BEING ABLE TO DO WHAT I WANTED TO DO WHAT WAS IMPORTANT TO ME IT JUST REALLY HURT ME.” BUT DURING GRADUATION REHEARSAL THIS MORNING LILIANA GOT THE NEWS. SCHOOL OFFICIALS GAVE HER TO WEAR THE FEATHER LILIANA: “I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT THEY DO THIS FOR EVERY NATIVE AMERICAN STUDENT IF THEY WANT TO DO IT SO IT’S NO SEEN AS JUST DECORATION ITS SEEN AS A CULTURAL AND SPIRITUAL THING.” WITH PHOTOGRAPHER MIKE PLEWS JOHN CHAPMAN WOWT SIX NEWS. OPS RELEASED A STATEMENT REGARDING THE SITUATION IT SAYS THE DISTRICT IS REVIEWING ITS GUIDELINES.. AND… MOVING FORWARD, THE DISTRICT WILL WORK CLOSELY WITH BUILDING ADMINISTRATORS TO HELP ENSURE PROPER ACCOMMODA TION OF FAMILIES’ REGARDING GRADUATION ATTIRE.
