How to crochet a children's Christmas cardigan / sweater

hi everyone so in this tutorial I'm going to show you how to crochet this cute Christmas cardigan so this cardigan can be made in a number of different sizes and for all of the information on how to make the different sizes please see the description box below so thank you very much for watching and please make sure to subscribe to my channel for more crochet videos so to begin your cardigan you want to start off by making a slip knot so to do a slip knot take your yarn and take your finger and wrap the yarn around your finger once and then twice then take the first loop and pull it over the second loop and then take the second loop and pull it all the way over your finger you then want to take your crochet hook go in through this space and pull tight and there we have a slipknot and now once you have your Slipknot we are now going to make our foundation chain and we are going to chain 73 so chain one two three four all the way up to 73 I have made my foundation chain and now we are on to round one say to begin round one we are going to do ten double crochets and we're going to do our first double crochet into the second chain from the hook so here is the first chain from the hook and here is the second chain and you want to yarn over and go down into this chain the second chain from the hook yarn over and pull up a loop yarn over and pull through two lengths and then yarn over and pull through the final two loops on your hook so there we have one double crochet into that chain and now we're going to do the same thing into the next chain one double crochet and then you want to do a third one into the next chain and keep going until you have ten ten double crochets so like that so there we have worked ten double crochets and now into this next chain here we are going to do a corner and whenever we do a corner throughout our cardigan we are going to do double crochet chain one double crochet all into the same chain or the same space so we're going to go down into this next chain and do a corner so that is double crochet chain one double crochet so yarn over and go down into this next chain and do one double crochet and then chain one and then yarn over and go back down into the same chain again and do a second double crochet like that and that creates the first corner and now we are going to do fourteen double crochets or one double crochet into each of the next fourteen chains so go down into this next chain here and do one and then do one double crochet into this next chain and keep going until you have fourteen okay say that I have these fourteen double crochets and now into the next chain we are going to do another corner so we're going to do double crochet chain one double crochet all into this next chain so go down into the chain and do one double crochet and then chain one and then do a second double crochet back down into the same chain like that and now you want to do 20 double crochets or one double crochet into each of the next 20 chains so do your first one into the next chain and then second into the next and keep going until you have 20 we have these 20 double crochets and now into this next chain we're going to do another corner so double crochet chain one double crochet all into the chain so go ahead and work a corner into this next chain here like that and now we are going to do 14 more double crochets or 1 double crochet into each of the next 14 chains so go down into the next chain and do the first one and then do one into the next and keep going until you have 14 so like that so there we have 14 and now into this next chain we are going to do our last corner for this round so we're going to do double crochet chain one double crochet into this next chain here like that and you should find that you have 10 chains left and we are going to do one double crochet into each of these last 10 chains so we're finishing off with 10 double crochets so do one into the next and the next and keep going to the end and that should be 10 there we have come to the end of round 1 and it's kind of difficult to see at the moment that we have already started to form the shape of our cardigan so this long section at the back here with the 20 double crochets will form the back of the cardigan and then where we worked 14 double crochets on either side that will form the armholes and then the two little M sets of 10 double crochets on either side here will form the front so each one will form one half of the front and now we are on to round two say to begin round two you want to chain one and turn and this chain one does not count as a stitch so we are going to start off by doing one double crochet into every single stitch until you reach the chain one space of the first corner here so you want to do one double crochet into each stitch until you reach the first chain one space so yarn over and go down into the first double crochet here as our chain one did not count as a stitch and do one double crochet and then do one double crochet into the next stitch and the next and keep going until you reach the chain one space so I have one more double crochet to work into here like that and there I have reached the first chain one space and into this chain one space we are going to do a corner so we are going to do double crochet chain one double crochet all into this chain one space here so yarn over and go into the chain one space and do double crochet chain one double crochet like that and now we are going to do one double crochet into each stitch until you reach the next chain one space here or the chain one space of the next corner so yarn over and go down into the first double crochet here right after that chain one space and do one double crochet and then do one into the next stitch and keep going until you reach the next chain one say that I have worked these double crochets and I have reached the next chain-1 here and we are going to go down into this chain one and work a corner so we're going to do the same thing as we did back here so yarn over and go down into the next chain one space and do double crochet chain one double crochet so work a corner into that chain one space and we're going to continue working this all the way around for round two you want to do one double crochet into each stitch until you reach the next chain one space here and then you want to go down into this chain one and do a corner and then you want to do one double crochet into each stitch until you reach the next chain one space here so this is the last chain one and do a corner into this space so do double crochet chain one double crochet and then just finish off by doing one double crochet into each stitch until the end so you're doing double crochets into each stitch until the chain one and then work a corner into that chain one space then double crochets until the next chain one and a corner into that's one and then double crochets one into each stitch until the end so just continue working that for round two and remember whenever you do a corner you work double crochet chain one double crochet all down into that chain one space I have finished working that all the way around for round two and this is what you should have at the end of that round and now we are on to Round three so for the next six rounds of four rounds three four five six seven and eight so six rounds we are just going to keep repeating round two so to begin every round you want to chain one and turn and that chain one never counts as a stitch and you then want to do one double crochet into each stitch until you get to the chain one space and then you want to go down into that chain one space and do a corner and then do one double crochet into each stitch until the next chain one space and then do a corner into that space and then just keep repeating that all the way around so do one double crochet into each stitch along the longer section until you get to the next chain one space and do a corner into this one and then do double crochets until the next chain one space the last one here and do a corner into this chain one space and then do one double crochet into each stitch until you get to the end so you want to keep repeating that keep repeating round two until you get to the end of round eight so that should be six rounds so I have finished working those rounds so I came to the end of round 8 and I have already started to add some of my little snowflake stars here but don't worry I'll show you how to do them at the end so then at the end of round 8 this is what you should have and you should have found that in each of those rounds you should have more double crochets in between your corners so at the end of round 8 here you should have 18 double crochets along this short section before you get to the chain one and then you should have 30 along this section before this chain 1 here and then you should have 36 double crochets between these two chain ones here and then you should have 30 again and then 18 so 18 30 36 30 18 so just if you want to check that is how many you should have and now in round 9 we are going to be adding in the shape of our cardigan so we're going to be adding in a front a back and two arm holes so we're ready to move on to round 9 so to begin this round you want to chain 1 and turn and this chain 1 does not count as a stitch so we are going to start off by doing 1 double crochet into each of the first five stitches so yarn over and go down into the first stitch and do one double crochet and then do one into the next stitch and the next and the fourth one and then the fifth like that so there we have one two three four five and now into this next stitch you want to do two double crochets both into this stitch so like that so there we have one double crochet into five stitches and then two double crochets into the next stitch and you want to keep repeating this all the way along until you reach the first chain one space so do one double crochet into the next stitch and the next and keep going until you have five like that and then do two double crochets bathe into this next one and continue that until you reach this first chain one so I have repeated that and I have reached my first chain one here so I did two double crochets into this last double crochet and then I have my chain one and we are going to go down into this chain one space here and do one double crochet like that and now you want to skip all of these stitches until you get to the next chain one space here or the next corner and we are going to go down into this next chain one and do a double crochet so yarn over and go to the next chain ones we're skipping all of these stitches and go into the next chain one space here and do a double crochet so yarn over and do a double crochet nice and neat if possible into this chain one space and that is going to create our first arm hold like that and now we are going to continue working one double crochet into five stitches and then two double crochets into the next stitch all the way along the back here along this longest section until you get to the next chain one space so go down into the next double crochet here and do one double crochet and then do a second one into the next stitch and then a third into the next and a fourth and then a fifth so do five double crochets so we have our one into the chain one space and that doesn't count and then we have five double crochets and now you want to do two double crochets into the next stitch like that and continue working that until you reach the next chain-1 I have worked all the way along this longest section and I did two double crochets into this last stitch at the end and I have reached the next chain-1 and we're going to do the same thing as we did before to create the other armhole we're going to do one double crochet into this chain one space like that and then we're going to skip all of these next stitches until you reach the next chain one space here and then we're going to go down into this chain one and do a double crochet so yarn over go into the next chain one space here and do one double crochet and try and make these nice and neat and now to finish off round nine you just want to keep working five double crochets and then two into the next all the way along so would do one into the next stitch here and one into the next and keep going until you get to the end of the round so I have finished working that for round nine and at the end of this round this is what you should have so we have the shape of our cardigans finished and now we are on to round ten so to begin this round you want to chain one and turn and I just forgot to mention at the end of round nine you should have 88 double crochets so now for round 10 we are going to do one double crochet into each of the next seven stitches and then two double crochets into the next stitch and we're going to keep repeating that all the way around we're doing seven double crochets and then two into the next seven double crochets two into the next all the way around so and go down into this first stitch here and do one double crochet then do one into the next then a third fourth fifth six and seven and then you want to do two double crochets both into this next stitch here like that and continue that for round 10 that I have come to the end of round 10 and we are now on to round 11 so for the rest of the length of your cardigan you just want to do rounds of plain double crochet so to begin every round you want to chain one and turn and that chain one never counts as a stitch and then just do one double crochet into every single stitch until you get to the end here and then do that again chain one and turn and do one double crochet into each stitch all the way around and in each round that you do you should have 99 double crochets so you should always have 99 double crochets in every single round so just keep working that rounds of plain double crochet until you have the length cardigan that you want so you can do as many repeats as you like you can do five or six or seven or eight depending on what size you are making and how long you want your cardigan to be save for each round you will chain one and turn and then do one double crochet into this first stitch here and one double crochet into the next and the next and just keep doing that all the way around and then keep repeating that around and then once you have the links cardigan that you want we can then move on and add our little stars or our snowflakes like this and I will show you how to do that now add your stars with your snowflakes you want to take a yarn needle and then a piece of white or cream yarn and you need about this much so not too much and then you want to take your work and work out where you want your star with all snowflake to be and you want to go to where you would want the center of the star to be so where you would want this center point here and I'm going to add a star into this area here and I want the center to be in this stitch here so I'm going to go up from the in side out into that stitch like that so come out where you want the star the center of your star to be and now we are just going to make our points or our spokes of the star so it's really easy so I'm going to go up one stitch so directly above it and I'm going to go up and down like that and make sure that you are leaving an end here to weave in later so I have gone up to create my first line and then I'm going to come down here back out into the center and now I'm going to go down so I'm going to create the opposite spoke down so go down one stitch and then come out in the center again so you're always coming out in the center like that and now I'm going to go across so I'm going to make my spoke that comes across and I'm going to go across two stitches but it's up to you if you wanted to make a smaller one then you could go across and have one stitch here but I'm going to go across too so I'm going to go across here and then I'm going to come out in the center again and then I'm going to do the same thing across too and I'm going to come out in the center so there we have created a cross like that and now we need to create the diagonal spokes or the diagonal lines so do the same thing go across here and I'm going to go into the side of this stitch and you could go back to the center but I'm just going to go right down underneath and come out where I would want the other diagonal line to come out like that and I'm going to pull this yarn through and it's really up to you how you do these you just want to kind of create a star shape and now I'm going to get back into the center and come out here diagonal and pull my yarn through and then I'm going to come back into the center and then I'm going to come out here for my last one diagonally so to create this last diagonal line come out here and go back into the center and there we have created that star and I have created all different ones they are all individual so I have some little ones here where instead of going up a whole stitch I went up half the stitch and then just across one and then I have this one where I have the five stitches across longer than the diagonals and then I have another little one they continue to work stars like that
