How to Knit an Oversized Chunky Sweater (for total beginners)

[Music] hey everyone I will be showing you how I made this sweater I am a beginner and this was my first attempt to make a sweater it’s so far from being perfect but I still love how it turned out I will do my best to share with you the whole process this is the overall diagram I basically use rectangles I started with the back the length 7 centimeters the width is around 60 centimeters made by 60 stitches it was rather arbitrary I couldn’t get the desire to get my first try I had started with 84 at first and it became huge so I decided to make in 60 and it turned alright the yarn I’m using is thick so I had an oversight look thinner rihanna’s will need double or triple of these measurements the borders are 6 centimeters and they are made of rubbing stitch I did 2 needs and 2 pearls I used four and a half full of this yarn it suggest number six needles I’m using two a pair of needles for the back number five is for ribbing part for a more tidy look to start with you shall leave some yarn on the left side [Music] if you use two needles you gotta make them tight once we pull one needle off it shouldn’t be too loose this is from another angle when you do this you get two stitches [Music] I completed sixty stitches then I pull one needle off I start doing ribbon stitch this is purl stitch I make two of them [Music] then the yarn goes behind and I do two knit stitches yarn comes forward to needs two pros this is how it goes [Music] beginners should be careful it is easy to mess this up if you confuse the order [Music] I’m ending this row of it’s purl then I have to start with knit stitch because it has two sides so if one side is knit stitch the backside of it is forming as a purl so if you finish your row with knit stitch start the next row of it’s purl stitch or vice versa this demonstrates how small it looks when it’s on one needle you shouldn’t be fooled by this when you are midway through a row you can get a similar look to finish project number six needles are for the main body part I start purling I do the whole row bit purl stitch [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] the next side is gonna be my front side or the right side and the purl side is gonna be the back or the wrong side [Music] once you finish a ball of yarn simply tie a knots with the new young I kept knitting until I have so many centimeters I didn’t count the rows I just stopped when I’m satisfied with the height then we bind off you have to take two stitches at once and knit them together and that stitch goes back to the first needle then we do the same thing [Music] [Music] mandir is just one stitch left we will cut the yarn make sure there is some extra yarn and then this yarn goes through that loop i just tie another knot to secure that [Music] [Music] now moving on the front side it is almost the same thing except for the neckline so the same measurements applies to this this is my very simple neckline it has one inch of depth I have 60 stitches in total I’m gonna part that in three sections both shoulders are gonna be made of 20 stitches and the middle part I mean the neckline also gonna be 20 stitches the front side is around an inch shorter than the back side this is the points where we start to in the shoulders this is the knit side so I start knitting I will keep knitting until I knit 20 stitches so I completed 20 stitches and I do the neckline I will bind off through 20 stitches [Music] here I have 19 and this one makes it 20 so I will start making the other shoulder [Music] we lost our connection to the other shoulder so we will make this shoulder for now then we will move on to the other one [Music] [Music] now they are on two different needles we will need that number six needle so we just take another needle and transfer all the stitches [Music] I kept comparing to the backside at this point for example I should do one or two more rows then we only have one shoulder left first we have to attach the yarn simply take the first stitch and tie a knot I take my number-6 needle and start knitting and we can’t drop that needle too [Music] [Music] [Music] I will solve the shoulders make sure the right sides are facing each other right side is the knit side [Music] [Music] this is how it looks when it’s finished by the way my head couldn’t fit from here so I left a bit open from both sides now we are onto sleeves after shoulders I solve the size of the body and I tried it on because it was a rectangle shade I expected it to be drop shoulder but shoulders looked very normal I took measurements from my shoulders to my wrists after I touched lives to the body they turn out to be drop shoulder as I expected before and the sleeves became too long I started the cuffs with 24 stitches and I ended sleeves with 42 stitches as I go up I kept adding more stitches this is how I measured my cups this was around 20 centimeters which equals around 20 stitches but then I consider the seam allowances and also I will use a smaller number of needles so I decided on 24 I’m using them for needles because I want them to be a bit tighter and it is just the same thing except for the needle size I start with 24 stitches and I do 6 centimeters of ribbing stitch as always and as usual I continue with one row purl one row knit after I knit for one and a half centimeters and when I’m on eight point five centimeters I add two more stitches and it makes 26 stitches I kept using the same measurement for every one and a half centimeters I keep adding two more stitches one at the beginning one at the end of the rope these are the number of the stitches I started with 24 here it is 40 I keep doing this this way then I decided it wasn’t wide enough I added two more and I end it with poorly two stitches because I used smaller needles the cuffs had 20 centimeters of width and it was around 36 cuffs became tighter with smaller needle [Music] here you see the arch it’s increasing this way I’m going to show you how I add extra stitches [Music] it is that simple after we have this we just keep rolling so now we finish this row now we have to add one more stitch we added one at the beginning of the row and now we’re going to add another at the end of the rope for a symmetrical look this is the front side this is the back side [Music] right sides are facing each other we will solve that it’s the best using tea on dates or it on our pieces seams will be much more secure this way so after binding off don’t cut the yarn right at the end of the knot leave some extra yarn later we use that for sewing this is how it looks by it looks a bit funny there is this bolt here it happened because of the unnatural arch but here’s an advice for you can’t start adding extra stitches right after you finish your cuff and instead of one and a half centimeters you can add your extra stitches for every 5 or 10 centimeters I think that will give you a more natural arch [Music] so I already solved the size of the body and I left a bit open around 15 centimeters or 6 inches I think we take our sleeve and we determine the highest point and we pin it the sleeves are the right side out and the body is wrong side out and at highest points of sleep shall touch the shoulders in this way lifestyles are facing each other [Music] [Music] moving on to the neck I did fit the stitches here I copy the turtleneck sweaters measurements I have we only do ribbing stitch here again two needs two pearls for ribbing I kept knitting until I had two in centimeters here I want to show you a mistake that I made that’s why I told you to be careful I confused the order and created a straight line here this doesn’t have a front and back side but we will do something different we will sew around seven centimeters on one side then we will take it inside out there we will sovereign 13 centimeters on the other side [Music] [Music] [Music] I’ve learned something later these nuts don’t really prevent them from fraying after every knot there must be some extra yarn and using a hook we should make that yarn going through some stitches I didn’t know that at that time and I had some troubles later on here I will try to explain you what I’m doing I have decided to do this after I examined this sweater this is that 13 centimeter and this is the 7 centimeters it will be inside of the sweater we shall see none of them for the solving part we will take our sweater inside out you should place it like this the 7 centimeters should be close to us as you see the 13 centimeters is on the other side in the 7 centimeter close to us our neck has seam on one side so we shall pinned opposite side the sweater is wrong side out the seam of the neck shall meet the seam of the shoulder and the pinpoint shall meet the other shoulder seam [Music] [Music] [Music] so finally I’m done I achieve the look that I wanted the sleeves are a bit too long but I kinda like it they look like balloon sleeves I hope this was helpful for you and thanks for watching bye [Music]
