How to sand and cement render concrete block wall 1st coat scratch coat DIY

music in background πŸ™‚ hello everyone welcome
back so this short but long garden wall im going to be showing you how i do cement render
and this will be my scratch coat witch is the under coat for your top
coat right so just going to scratch the wall here 1st coat sand and cement then tomorrow
rub it all up i am starting at the bottom and working my
way up to the top so when you coat it keep it as neat as possible (bird’s singing in background ) when you get an area done scratch it get it
marked key for the next coat continue on as such obviously before you start to coat you will
clean down the wall 1st taking of all the lumps all the preparation wet down the wall
as well witch i have all ready done I have already hosed it all down , i dont
want to soak down there as much as the soil on the other side is keeping it wet anyway (sound of cement being applied birds singing) again coat it as neat as
you can… less lines the better ( tool marks) pick any hard stones out as you go (tools scratching the cement rendering on
the concrete wall ) keep it flat keep tools clean any render sticking out you can always go over
it again neat you scratch it means less scraping and
preparation you will have to do next time Music “!!

  1. Hi mate,

Couple of questions for ya pal.

When u watered down the walls, is it not best to use PVA bond on the walls instead???

Also, is there something called lime plaster or lime rendering??? Is that used for outside rendering??? I thought lime plaster/render was a breathable render rather sand and cement.

What is the ratio mix to your render?? Just normal building sand???

    Much appreciated,
    Mozzer.

  5. You decorated that wall with cement to perfection despite those scorching temperatures. Definitely worthy of an ice cream after that job πŸ™‚

  6. Great job πŸ™‚ I like how you consider the diffrent moisture levels for top and bottom with ground water and sun exposure, I can see that making a really big diffrence in long term strength of bonding to to the block i must admit πŸ˜€ Thanks for the share, I can really see your technique here, like it would be hard to replicate to your extent as you make it look so easy but it gives a great idea for folk like myself who are still early learners of the trade πŸ™‚ My best my friend. Paul.

  7. Great job thanks for sharing Mac ! Did you use SBr prior to applying render ? And did you use mesh on your scratch coat ?
I've built similar garden wall /flower bed recently (all constructed of breeze blocks) and was wondering if sbr / mesh is any good on new build walls? Also did u add any placticiser to your sand /cement mix?
