How to Seam Knitting – Mattress Stitch on Garter Fabric

Now we’re going to work mattress stitch on
garter stitch fabric. Joining the two edges. It’s still going in the same direction, the
knitting on both pieces is parallel. But this is a very specific fabric.Garter
stitch has the ridges are made up of umbrellas and smiles. So we’re going to find on the edge of the
fabric, we’re going to match up our ridges and we’re going to join them one to one. I’m going to find, it’s a little twisty here
but you can see the umbrellas and the smiles. So this is a smile. I’m going to come underneath with my yarn. And then on the other first ridge over here,
I’m going to pick the umbrella. So you can see how it comes umbrella, smile,
umbrella. And again, I’m going to keep my needle moving
in the same direction as the seam that I’m joining. Now I’m going to come back to the other pieces
and I’m doing smiles on the left. I’m going to pick the next ridge and go up
under the smile close to the edge. And I’m going to come back to the right piece
and come under the umbrella. And then I’m going to pull it. Now this is not as invisible as it is on stockinette
but you can see where the seaming yarn is and how that pulls the ridges together. And then that’s how it looks on the other
side. It’s much less obvious of a seam than the
stockinette one.
