Michigan State University Rehabilitation: Lymphedema Closed Toe Compression Garment Donning

Today, I’m going to show you how to don a
closed-toe compression garment. What I have here is called an easy slide, and it’s a device
designed to help you don your closed toe stockings. It looks a little intimidating but it comes
with some easy, very basic instructions. It even gives you steps in what you’re supposed
to do with the easy slide. So, it’s really a very good way and easy way to help you don
your closed toe stockings. So, put the easy slide on. The easy slide comes in different
sizes too, so you’ve got to make sure that you get the correct size for the size of your
foot. The green goes on top, and that is actually signified by a number two. Under here we have
a one. and we also have a 3, so those are the steps that you have to go through to get
your closed toe stocking on. So, I also have rubber gloves, which become very important
in getting your compression stocking on. My first goal is to try to get the heel in place.
[Talking under her breath while putting the stocking on]. So, I’ve already got my heel
in place, which was relatively easy with the easy slide. At this point in time, all you
have to do is follow the numbers on how to get the easy slide out now. So number one.
You pull the back. That release velcro. And your second step is two, and that will pull
the easy slide out. Step three is really just getting the easy slide back into the proper
position to don it. So you pull three, you velcro this shut, and you’re ready to don
the garment. At this point in time, I’m going to put on my rubber gloves and I’m going to
work this compression garment up. I don’t want to pull at the top. You can grab the
garment, but you don’t want to grab at the very top and pull like this. So you can grab
the garment and place it where you want it to be, which is right below your knee cap.
If you need to pull your garment up, don’t pull it from the top, you pull it from your
ankle, and you work your garment up. Conversely, if you’ve over pulled your garment and need
to work it down, you can use your rubber gloves to work it down. So once the garment’s on,
I inspect for any sort of wrinkles, and I’ll smooth the garment out. You may need to adjust
your toes, the toe piece of the garment, and I will work the garment both up and down once
I get the closed toe garment on.
