Michigan State University Rehabilitation: Lymphedema Compression Garment Donning with Cage

Today I’m going to show you how to don your compression garment using cage apparatus. It’s also important that you have a good pair of rubber gloves to help you don your compression garment. You can get these at a medical supply company or online. I have had a few patients come in with these cages to ask me how to use them. One of the biggest problems we have with using this cage is your caff girth can’t exceed the girth of the cage, so for a lot of people that
have large caffs this is not going to work, but for others it may be the answer that they need to help them get their garment on. So the first thing you’re going to do here… is… you’re going to take your compression garment and you’re going to fold it. Over the cage. This cage takes a little practice
getting used to, but with time you’ll get use to it. So once you fold that over what you’re going to do is you’re going to take your rubber gloves and you’re going to work that garment down until you see the heel of the garment. And then you can actually straighten the garment out using your rubber gloves to place it where ever you want. Once I see the heel of the garment that’s my clue that that’s as far as I’m going to push the garment down. Then you stand up… You have to hang on to something because you will be on one leg. Then you’re going to step into the garment. Once you’ve stepped into it you still have
to use your rubber gloves to get your heel in place, because quite often what happens is that your heel ends up in the wrong place. Quite often the heel ends up over by your achilles and in my case the heel was under the arch a little bit more. You’ve got to get your heel in place, so use your rubber gloves to get your heel in place. Once you’ve got your heel in place you can use your rubber gloves to pull your garment up. Don’t pull the garment just from the top. Your going to place your garment where you want it and then use your gloves to pull it up. In this case I have a pull it up for it isn’t high enough. I’m going to start here at my ankle, and I’m going to bring that garment up to where I want it. Once the garment is where I want it I will look to make sure there are no wrinkles anywhere and that my heel is in place. Quite often you have to fiddle with your foot caff to get comfortable but you can use your gloves for this.
