Michigan State University Rehabilitation: Lymphedema Open Toe Compression Garment Donning

So today, I’m going to show you how to don
compression garments. This is an open toe stocking. This of course is a closed toe stocking.
I have here three different assistance devices that we are going to use here today. Also
of importance is a goo pair of rubber gloves. These are important in helping you get your
garment on as well as they will save the garment from runs, so make sure you have a good pair
of rubber gloves. I’m going to start out with an open toe stocking. The open toe stocking
will often come with a little apparatus called a “slippie” that fits over your foot to help
you get the open toe garment on. I prefer one of these. These are called easy slides.
These can be ordered online. They come in different sizes depending on the size of your
foot, but the easy slide really sort of a great invention to help you get your garment
on. It’s double layered, so the garment will slide very easily onto your foot. So, to use
your easy slide, all you have to do is put this over your foot and grab your open toe
stocking. You want to make sure that you’re not pulling your garment up from the top,
and all you’re going to do, is you want to grab your stocking, and you want to pull it
until the heel gets in place. My heel, actually, right now, is right here, so I’m going to
grab my rubber gloves, and the first thing I’m going to do is work this garment up my
leg until I get the heel in place. So you’ll notice that I’m not grabbing or pulling the
garment, I’m using my rubber gloves to work the garment on. What I usually do when I use
the easy slide too is once I get the heal in place, I may actually bring that up a little
bit higher, because what I’m going to do is step on the easy slide and pull my foot out.
So this is pretty good for now. So at this point in time, grab onto something, step on
your easy slide, and you’re going to pull your foot out. And it did pull the garment
down a little bit, but that’s alright. I’m just going to grab my rubber gloves, and we’re
going to work that heel back into place. At this point in time, I have a few wrinkles.
We’re going to leave that at this point in time, and we’re just going to place the garment
where we want it. Don’t over pull the garment. The biggest mistake that people make is that
they want to pull their garment up and over their knee. So it should fall below your kneecap.
So this is about where I want my garment to rest. Now, I see a wrinkle down there. I’m
going to get that wrinkle out, just by smoothing out my garment. I also have to take out a
wrinkle there. Once I get the garment in place how I want it, what I usually do is I will
smooth it out, both ways up and down, so the weave isn’t just in one direction. And that
is how you don an open toe stocking.
