NIU’s clothing swap provides students free professional attire

Just in time for the career fairs on campus,
the NIU women’s resource center hosts a clothing swap, offering free, gently used
professional attire for students. NIU alumna and designer, Lee Anne Park personally donated
more than 200 pieces for the event. This event is a clothing swap that we put on to help
business students that couldn’t afford business clothes for career planning and interviewing.
Lee Anne was an alum and was interested in donating some clothing and we decided to kind
of merge these two great events of her donation and the clothing drive, and this is how this
event came to be then. We first did the event last fall and started it off not quite as
large as this, but the intent was really to provide students with some clothes, some much
needed clothes and to focus on gathering some professional apparel for when they do interviews
for career fairs and internship fairs. This event has turned out awesome, I was at the
one last semester and it just has been so much more than we expected. We tried to get
the word out and it was just great to see people lined up outside the doors before it
started. I tried on the clothes, I do have a couple pairs of their clothes and they fit
awesome! It’s great to see an alum come back and give back to the community like this
and it’s great to see that sense of community here at this event. Several students have
come up and thanked me personally today and were very excited because they said they were
wearing their outfits tomorrow for their career event. We’ve had students that have said,
“Oh great, I’m going to wear these tomorrow,” so it’s making Lee Anne feel good and us
feel really good too.
