Qualifying to Sit for the Uniform CPA Exam as a Washington State Candidate

The Uniform CPA Examination is one of the
“Three Es” — Education, Examination, and Experience — that constitute the requirements
for becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the United States. Although the CPA Exam itself is uniform across
all U.S. jurisdictions, eligibility requirements vary. Each jurisdiction has specific requirements
regarding age, residency, education, and other requirements. How do you know if you qualify to sit for
the CPA Exam as a candidate through the Washington State Board of Accountancy? To qualify to sit for the CPA Exam, as a Washington
State candidate, you must meet the education requirement. So, what is the education requirement? In Washington State, the minimum education
requirement is a Bachelor’s degree (with 150 semester credit hours), in any major (from
a regionally or nationally accredited) college or university — that includes a 24 semester
credit hours in accounting subjects, of which at least 15 semester hours are at the upper
level or graduate level and 24 semester hours in business subjects. So, I don’t have to have a degree in accounting
to qualify? No, you don’t have to have a degree in accounting. What if I earned my education outside of the
United States? If you received your education from a college
or university outside the United States or from a non-accredited U.S. college or university
you must have your education evaluated by NASBA International Evaluation Services (NIES). Okay, it seems like I meet the education requirements
to sit for the CPA exam. What do I do now? The Board contracts with CPA Exam Services
(CPAES) for application processing for Washington’s CPA exam applicants. You may obtain an application, information,
or apply online. Please contact CPAES at (800) 272-3926 or
