Rhymes & Pearls for the Class of 2023

Hello Class of 2023, My name is Nathan, I’m a 2022, and I wanted to offer you some advice, Some pearls of wisdom for your
1st year here at Queen’s Med, So I wrote you a song, This is genuine advice though, These are things I wish I’d known a year ago, It’s called Rhymes and Pearls for the Class
of 2023, And it goes like this, Welcome to year 1, you’ve just begun, it’s enormous fun, at Queen’s to… Study Medicine, any reticence Will surely end, when you make friends in, O-week, So go meet your peers, Go party at Stages and jump off the pier, Go to Mio Gelato and Beers for Queers, Cuz Queen’s is the scene for you! If… you…. like… Showing it off at the beach, Then head down to Beverly Street, If indoor sports are more your crowd, There’s rock-climbing just north of town, If you like fresh bread and baked treats, There’s Pan Chancho on Princess Street, If you prefer chocolate and sweets, There’s Cards and Cacao Seventy, Just be wary when you are a-roaming, For Kingston is quite a small town, And no matter the good or ill omen, You’ll bump into your profs all around. So take it from me if you’re willing, To listen to some old advice, You’re better off spending your shillings, And enjoying this time of your life, And if you’re a songwriting Jew, like yours truly, Then Musikki has open mic night every Tuesday, But if you prefer to dance, rather than sing, then The Spot is overcrowded and has overpriced drinks So, maybe go to Stages, or the Underground, Or the Grizz, or The Brass, and while you’re downtown, if you’re hungry, then Tommy’s is open late, and there’s Morrison’s in the morning when you finally awake… But you… Didn’t come here just for drinking, Let’s talk about class – are you thinking, What will they ask on the unit tests, I got past admissions, but now there’s the rest… Don’t worry, Just sleep, And in the morning, eat your cereal, The tests only assess, like, one eighth of the material That’s covered in class, And 60 is a pass, Not that I’m endorsing skating by on half your ass, But your classmates will be here for you
for this adventure, It’s not a competition – you’ll all work together, and the Lecturers are awesome, here at Queen’s Med, They prepare you pretty well, for what’s ahead… There’ll be… Time enough to learn all the things you need to know, time for Music, and for Medicine, and for the MVN show, oh and… Don’t buy all the textbooks – use the QMed drive, It’s got notes for all the courses – I used it to survive, the DILs, the lectures, the thrills of infectious Diseases, the readings on peds and the nexus of Intermural sign-ups and observerships, how to lather up with Purell, and read a patient list And if you go to Elentra, under learning events, and you Filter by cohort, then you’ll find the contents, Of every course and every module that we have tried, And it’s pretty much the same, so it’s a useful guide… But the key-take-home pearl I’d like to express, is that 1st year’s a transition – so honestly… don’t stress… Just have fun and meet new people and trust in the wisdom of Dr. Sanfilippo! So… Grab your bag and your stethoscope, Your clinical attire, and your sharp white coat, You’ve started on your journey towards your MD, And we’re all excited to meet you, Class of 2023! Welcome to Queen’s Med, 2023s!
