Vietnam War Documentary: Inside the Viet Cong – Tactics, Weapons, Tunnels, Uniform

the enemy in Vietnam is all too often invisible striking without warning from the shadows but tonight the face of the enemy in rare films of the Vietcong in action the film was shot by communist cameraman processed in Vietnam taken to Paris for editing now shown for the first time on American television Charles Kuralt discovered Viet Nam’s war in the field is the narrator this is propaganda film properly heroic as propaganda film should be but under the layers of singing warriors marching gaily to battle there are also some truths about the enemy in South Vietnam some truths about the kind of enemy which uses as weapons the terrain and the night and the weather which has proved that Sam pans and even in some circumstances bicycles can be used to better effect than tanks and an enemy which has waged a markedly successful war against the larger force which we train this is an enemy which steals from us the weapons of the 20th century and supplements them with the weapons of the 16th century the crossbow [Music] [Applause] [Music] the spear launcher [Music] a spike [Music] [Applause] [Music] and the mantrap Oh correspondent who has ever ventured into the South Vietnamese countryside doubts the effectiveness of these lethal traps they make you careful where you step that’s the idea this music by the way came with the film this is a smaller model of the man travel for one foot only there are hundreds of thousands of these things along the jungle trails covered over whether down they’re invisible they do that on many a jungle paths in South Vietnam if you trip on the line you may release such a booby trap as this one the porcupine [Music] lifted high up into the trees this thing can sweep a whole squad from a trail [Music] this is a bomb of spikes fashion to drop from above the Vietcong have become adept not only at moving fast themselves but it’s slowing the Vietnamese army down these bamboo spikes can pierce a GI boot and do these are irregular troops of the Vietcong people from the villages in the universal black peasant costume a kind of enemy very hard to know who can fight for the Vietcong at night and slip back into the villages in the daylight those may be villages supposedly controlled by the South Vietnamese government supposedly but the Vietcong are able to acquire actual mock-ups of the fortified villages of the government ops on which they can plan surprise attacks those attacks are usually carried out by the Vietcong regulars uniformed well hidden usually armed with mortars and automatic weapons captured down the years from the French and the Americans usually well trained the professional army which emerges from foxholes and tunnels to do battle and which in the Vietnamese War has proved more than a match for the craic combat troops of the South the American advised Vietnamese Rangers many of the sequences in this communist propaganda film were obviously staged for the cameraman or obviously not this is the kind of enemy which advances unseen dodges patrols cuts through barbed wire barricades Paris’s American helicopter pilots this happens every day is also incidentally the kind of enemy which can carry heavy explosives to the very walls of American army barracks filled with American soldiers that happened in play who night before last the kind of enemy which can bring down American planes firing from unseen positions in the forest the communist sources who provided this film say this is the wreckage of an American helicopter shot down one month ago January night it is a cardinal principle of guerrilla warfare that you strip the battlefield clean of weapons the Vietcong always do only the South Vietnamese Army dead are left here if yep tong dead and wounded whenever possible are carried away after the battle women do that work women sometimes do that work for the South Vietnamese army as well it is likely that they are sometimes the same women [Music] [Music] the flag says determined to win it’s interesting to note that day before yesterday before the raid on Pam Holloway the Vietcong attackers had infiltrated a village a thousand yards from the airstrip and not a single villager informed the Americans villagers understandably applauded for and provide food to whichever side seems to protect them best these seems though obviously posed are true enough in much of the countryside the Vietcong are welcomed by the American gangster protection principle this film which we repeat as of Vietcong propaganda film makes wife in the jungle seem a breeze it is actually other than that not all Viet Cong soldiers sleep at night and comfortable hammocks made from parachutes most communist troops are very young as young as 14 or 15 they are pale from weeks in the jungle they are very often hungry and their lives must be exhausted they cannot be imagined to receive mail from home very often but frankly they are making our life more miserable even than their own toaster all CBS news these are the faces of the enemy the leaders of the Vietcong the strategists of the hidden run jungle war which has kept the United States itself on the defensive the rarely seen chief of the Vietcong noi’m who told propaganda film he says we will fight on for the absolute victory of peace democracy and national liberation members of the Vietcong Central Committee knowin Vannoy a member of the cow dissect took home to a Buddhist and whole wave identified as a Roman Catholic leader of the Vietcong the Vietcong headquarters is in no one place it moves constantly and when it moves it takes its defense force with it these pictures while obviously posed for the camera still do depict the extremes of mobility which the Vietcong i upon for concealment from the air these are peaceful fishing boats in the mekong delta but they actually are the general headquarters of the communist forces the Vietcong Pentagon South Vietnamese counterintelligence worries a lot about the location of the Communists underground radio well here it is or there it was it means to abort another boat a two-color handbill press made the Communists say by copying some old plans from a Japanese catalogue you come across these handbills in every village in the countryside on still other both secretaries secretaries with typewriters obviously pleased to have their pictures taken and a communications float some of its equipment american-made and captured from the Vietnamese Army on November 24th 1963 at Gipp wah only 20 miles west of Saigon 300 of these Vietcong guerrillas infiltrated a South Vietnamese Army camp and on a signal from a bugle suddenly opened fire 36 government soldiers were killed 26 more wounded and after 40 minutes the Vietcong withdrew after seizing machine guns rifles and mortars like these after the action for American advisers were listed as missing and presumed captured they were captured as this film shows the Communists and the Defense Department agree on their names Kenneth Laura back sergeant 1st class whose wife Veronica lives in Fayetteville North Carolina Isaac Camacho sergeant first class of El Paso Texas Claud McClure specialist fifth class whose wife Rita lives in Chattanooga and sergeant George Smith of Chester West Virginia the Defense Department says they were captured in the midst of fierce hand-to-hand combat in the camp at yep wha they have been captives of the Communists and presumably constantly moving through the Vietnamese countryside for 15 months their ordeal committed to film now by the enemy in South Vietnam Charles Kuralt CBS News but quinoa an area less than 50 miles south of Saigon is the backdrop for summer tonight’s communist propaganda film from behind Vietcong lines indication if we accept the communist word for it of the relative impunity with which the guerrilla army can operate even this close to the heavy concentration of Vietnamese and American troops around the capital Charles Kuralt tells the story this is a lesson in viet cong tactics the south vietnamese strategic Hamlet’s of Chi Thien and Ventre province fortified with earthworks barbed wire and guard towers after it has been taken by the Vietcong they set about destroying its defenses that will make it easier to take next time the villagers pressed into service for the destruction will if the usual form is followed be pressed into service rebuilding it within a few hours when the South Vietnamese Army moves back in aerial surveillance is one of the get cons most serious problems this propaganda film makes constant references to the slaughter planes and the helicopters overhead and to the Vietcong ingenuity importing the spotters in this case a whole Vietcong village is being dismantled and moved to another place there are examples of this villages disappearing into the jungle you cannot strafe them if you cannot find them [Music] yep comp isn’t customarily lives in his own village and fights in his own village area the guerilla army of the Vietcong organized into companies and battalions take their world with container of boiled water and a bowl of rice pressed in a piece of nylon parachute one rice fall is the daily ration it’s as important as grenades or oil lamp or rifle the rice is usually freely given sometimes it’s extorted from the villages the South Vietnamese Army by the way when in the field gets its rice the same way sometimes freely given sometimes extorted a french tire leftover from the years of French domination of Indochina it is no longer useful as a tire it becomes a pair of sandals for a communist guerrilla others by the way wear the boots sometimes the whole uniforms are captured and killed South Vietnamese soldiers government army troops have been known to tie handkerchiefs around their arms before a battle so they can tell each other from the enemy [Music] they make rice they make shoes and they make propaganda a newspaper printing press in the midst of the jungle a stack of such newspapers in a village hut is sufficient cause for the government army to burn the hut down but the newspapers still circulate and the underground radio which the Communists call radio liberation still is heard in spite of the best government efforts to track it down in the tradition of Far Eastern propaganda broadcasting the voice of the Communist radio is often a woman’s voice the Vietnamese love shows just as the US Information Service circulates through the villages with portable movie screens and American movies the Vietcong put on shows of their own this one a sort of air defense ballet [Music] [Music] the villain here is supposed to be an American soldier making advances toward a defenseless Vietnamese housewife return of the Communist hero husband the Viet Cong has rarely seen before through Viet Cong odds palster all CBS news

  10. AMERICA IS A NATION CREATED BY SATAN THROUGH THE PAPACY TO SPREAD THEIR SYSTEM WHERE ALL ASPECTS OF LIFE IN ALL NATIONS SPIRITUALLY (MENTALLY) IS CONTROLLED BY PAPACY BEHIND THE SCENES. THIS SYSTEM IS TO FORCED PEOPLE TO OBEY THIS SIGNS (PEOPLE AND THINGS OF THIS WORLD THAT SATAN USES TO COMMUNICATE) THAT WHATEVER THEY SEE AND HEAR WILL COINCIDE IN THEIR MINDS AND FORCE THEM BY ALL MEANS TO OBEY. THIS IS WHAT THE BIBLE CALLED THIS SYSTEM AS MARK OF THE BEAST (KINGDOM OF SATAN-THIS WORLD) THAT RECEIVE IN THE FOREHEAD (MIND- WHICH MEANS YOU HAVE THE SPIRIT OF SATAN WHICH IS THE ENTIRE SOCIETY OF AMERICA AND THE REST) OR HAND (ACTIONS- SATAN USING THE SIGNS WHICH IS ABOVE MENTIONED TO DICTATE THEIR ACTION). SINCE SATAN CONTROL THE GOVERNMENTS AND ALL ASPECTS OF LIFE IN THIS WORLD THROUGH THE PAPACY AND AMERICA (THE BIGGEST ENEMIES OF GOD), THEY CREATED A SCRIPTED CONFLICT EACH NATIONS EVEN KILLING THEIR OWN PEOPLE TO APPEAR TO GOOD TO BE TRUE, FOR THE PURPOSE OF WIPING OUT NATIONS, PEOPLES, CITIES THAT AGAINST THE SYSTEM OF THE PAPACY AND AMERICA WHICH IS THE NORMAL AND STANDARDS OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY AND NOW THE REST OF THE WORLD BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY HAVE DONE SINCE 1898 STARTING FROM THE PHILIPPINES, JAPAN, VIETNAM, ETC.

  11. You know, in a way the United States (and in a greater sense, Western thinking) did win the Vietnam War. Vietnam — like China — was FORCED to embrace capitalism to some degree, because communist socialism was leading it to ruin. They had to open their economy, to survive. So, they did…and Vietnam today is a bustling, thriving nation — and all because they turned away from everything the Vietcong and the NVA fought for. Capitalism won. What a long, strange turn of events. The USA won the war on the battlefield, lost it through politics — and then ultimately won it again, through capitalism.

  12. The "Vietcong" is really the People's Liberation Armed Forces of the National Liberation Front for Southern Vietnam. Vive le Vietnam!

  13. 90 % of VN cilvian right now we want American cơme back , because we so tired and could not live with a coruptive brutal communist goverment

  14. The US drops millions of bombs on a country and then has the nerve to complain if they build a booby trap to defend themselves.

  15. just like Iraq, the people are not worthy of liberty because although clever, not smart enough to know how to have a real government that allows people to be free. so far only the Koreans were worth Americans dying.

  16. for all the suburbanites who love to comment on various videos about world affairs, just remember every politician that travels to these places and has talks with the echelons of their leadership, enters their top buildings etc, they will know stuff about these places you will never get to know.

  17. US is just a stupid bitch ass who thinks they are the hero and the boss of the world, well this video just proved how dumb they are and even the poor Vietnam can win the US. This story tells us that USA is shit without atomic bombs or nuclear weapons, so like stop telling me "oh that's because the US didn't drop an atomic bomb", IDGAF Vietcong don't need no atomic bombs

  18. I'm a Vietnamese living in Hanoi and I want to thank to American soldiers who served in Vietnam, you have protected the Democracy very well, but now our people have to live under this horrible Communist regime

  19. The Communist were assaulting countries all over the world, enslaving them to BIG GOVERNMENT control of people. So fuck all you Left-Wing Bastards!

  20. The South Vietnamesse people wanted to live free and not be enslaved by these Communist. I loved and had great sympathy for the South Vietnamesse who feared every night some gang of VC would raid their villages and murder and carry off booty and the young men and women.

  21. And the Domino Theory was right on.
Eastern Europe 1945, China 1948, North Korea invades the Free South. 1953 French lose to Vietminh, 1956, Hungry, 1959, Cuba,1962 Vietnam, South America the Caribbean Islands Angola, all of Africa… The Murderous Communist were fighting Freedom Loving People all over the world you ignorant communist POS!

  22. Not one Ingrate here was living then, and so are nothing but Liars and workers of Evil…Leftism has murdered millions for convenience. So no matter what you Panty wearing sobs say is meaningless and a Lie and the defenders of EVIL!

  23. We called them enemies as if they were evil monsters. We dehumanized them. But really, they were just trying to protect their homeland from invaders.

  24. The Japanese used almost all the same methods in World War II, yet they lost in four years. They used guerrilla tactics, the local terrain, traps and all the rest. So what's the difference here?

  25. US underestimated completely their enermy
and her fighting ability within their land
They got their Ass booted out along with all the Ware fare that failed..b52s ..flamethrowers..Agent orange..
Did Johnson not know Vietnams history..?
Didn’t he know the French got hammered by Ho chi min..obviously not

  26. Yeah we all know, during this period young people start to doubt in how usa government run the country, thats why there are Post-modernism and the brith of "hippies"

  27. I respect Vietnam. They defended their land. Why are we (USA) always up in someone else's country trying to tell them how to live? We got taught a valuable lesson. I hope we learned from it.

  28. remember the main Objective of us is to IMPOSE their Protestant christian values on nonchristian Subjects of course they will Deny Deny!!

  29. It’s no wonder support for the war declined. After seeing what they were up against sensible Americans would have concluded that a victory against the Vietnamese was highly unlikely.

  30. It's darkly humorous how the American press looked the other way when the VC or NVA would slaughter the elites in any town they'd capture. It was no anomaly, it was basic policy. The slaughter of civilians and the use of child soldiers were day to day, normal policies of the VC. Their own radio broadcasts talk about it and medals were given for the most mayors or city councilmen killed. Anyone who thinks the VC were the good guys is off their nut. Only the disorganization of the senior leadership of the ARVN caused their defeat.

  31. WELL DONE VIET CONG ! TOTAL RESPECT FOR STANDING UP TO THE RACIST HYPOCRITE VERMIN USA GOVERNMENT ! I LOVE VIETNAM !

  32. They never told the truth that US was fighting the international Rothschild empire, North Vietnam was only their vassal. That's why the Rothschild controlled media in USA all anti war.

  33. Uhhh the Vietnamese had Soviet AK47s?? Why are they being portrayed as so primitive, we had M16s that would constantly jam during a battle
